International Year of Light, 2015

2015 has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL2015). It aims to raise awareness of the achievements of light science and its applications, and its importance to humankind.

The history and practice of astronomy is inextricably interlinked with our quest to understand, study and manipulate light. We will participate in these IYL celebrations by initiating and collaborating on astronomy-related events across India.

The international campaign is focussing on a few themes in the context of astronomy and light, namely,

    (1) the universe as images,
    (2) cosmic microwave background light,
    (3) Einstein’s gravitation,
    (4) dark sky awareness and
    (5) galileoscope.

We invite all of you to write to us with ideas for campaigns in India and what you would like to do … let us build a national-level programme across the country together.
