Abstract : CZT-Imager payload in the Astrosat satellite is a hard X-ray instrument specifically designed to have spectroscopic capabilities above 10 keV. The scientific rationale for the choice of design parameters are described here. To achieve the scientific goal, several interesting and novel approaches are employed which include a) use of pixelated Cadium Zinc Telluride detectors in a large area array with continuous gain calibration, b) use of a box like collimator and Coded Aperture Mask (CAM) specially designed to have simultaneous background measurement as well as identifying confusing sources in the Field of View, c) a structured onboard intelligence for easy handling of data, and d) background reduction and measurement using large area scintillator detectors. Astrosat is scheduled to be launched in the next year and it is expected to provide wide band X-ray spectroscopic data for a variety of astrophysical sources. CZT-Imager, in conjunction with the other co-aligned instruments (SXT, LAXPC and UVIT) is expected to provide good spectral, timing and multi-wavelength measurements for a vast number of Astrophysical objects.
