Title : Ground-based VHE gamma-ray astronomy in India
Authors : Varsha Chitnis
Abstract Type: Invited
Abstract Category : Instrumentation and Techniques
Abstract : Very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays from celestial objects are detected indirectly using the ground-based atmospheric Cherenkov technique. India has a long history of experiments in this area, starting from the 1960s. Currently operational VHE gamma-ray telescopes include TACTIC at Mt Abu and HAGAR at Hanle in the Himalayas. 21m diameter MACE telescope has been recently installed at Hanle, which is one of the large size telescopes in the world. Also, work is underway for the development of a silicon photo-multiplier based camera for a 4m class telescope. A brief overview of instrumentation activities will be given.
