Abstract : It is well known that mass of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) correlates with velocity dispersion of the spheroidal component of its parent galaxy, and it likely correlates with the dark matter halo mass as well. Motivated by the existence of such correlations, we study the growth of a central black hole through accretion of matter into a general potential that includes the potential due to the dark matter halo. We find critical points of the flow and derive a relation for the mass accretion rate. Using this we estimate the growth rate of SMBH as a function of the growth rate of its parent halo and find a general relation between the mass of SMBH and halo. We further study the time evolution of this relation and compare with the observations.
