Abstract : | Ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes employing a single light collector are deployed to study gamma-ray sources from the universe. These telescopes record images of gamma/proton-initiated Cherenkov events, which are limited by spherical, coma, and astigmatism aberrations. Recent studies have shown that the use of a dual-mirror aspheric-reflecting surface known as the Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope (SCT) system can reduce these aberrations significantly. Besides minimizing aberrations, SCT also enhances angular resolution and field of view of the telescope.
Using an in-house developed code, we have carried out ray tracing simulation studies for a ~4m class SCT system proposed to be installed at Hanle in the Ladakh region of North India. The energy threshold for such a telescope using the CORSIKA simulation code (version 7.75) has been calculated. The results obtained for the point spread function (PSF) corresponding to the different thresholds and photon density estimates to varying energies for a SCT type telescope will be presented in the meeting. |
