Abstract : Supernovae explosions provide an important feedback mechanism for the evolution of galaxies, as they inject energy in the interstellar medium, and can propel gas and metals out of a galaxy. We study the evolution of supernovae explosions in the ambient medium using the Eulerian hydrodynamic code PLUTO, and specifically focus on the efficiency of energy injection by the supernovae to the interstellar medium. We investigate the loss of the explosion energy to cooling during various phases of explosion for varying ambient conditions. We analyze the thermodynamics of the swept-up shell formed at the periphery of a supernova, for varying ambient density and time since the explosion. We compare our results with the properties of the supernovae observed in the Universe, and explore the possibility that our simulations can serve as a diagnostic to determine their ages.
