Abstract : SN2017hcc in an anonymous host galaxy was remarkable for being a nearby, strongly polarized super luminous Type IIn supernova. Multi-epoch, low-resolution optical spectra of SN2017hcc were obtained from the Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) located in Hanle. The analysis focuses on both emission and absorption lines in the spectrum. The profiles of the most important emission lines – H-α, H-β, and H-γ– were studied to extract the various velocity components. By analyzing these and other lines, we infer the distribution of the circumstellar medium (CSM) and the possible epochs of its loss from the progenitor’s outer layers. The multi-epoch spectra are also used to model the interaction of the supernova ejecta and the dense CSM. We also present a comparative study of the spectra of 2017hcc with that of other, well-studied type-IIn events, taken at similar epochs. Our comparative study allows us to constrain the physical properties (density, opacity etc.), and morphology of the local CSM across events, and to better characterize the pre-explosion supernova masses.
