Zero Shadow Day 2018

We had launched a pilot program earlier this year to facilitate the celebration of Zero Shadow Day in schools across the country where it is visible. We had created resource material, organised two regional training workshops, and supported the programs conducted by local science popularisation groups in almost a 100 locations through our website. All of this was done in collaboration with a number of organisations.

We now plan to scale up this campaign to reach many more schools in all the 19 states and UTs which have Zero Shadow Days. To this effect, we have started planning for the initial set of three regional workshops, to be held in Puducherry, Raipur and Mumbai early next year. If you or your organisation would like to organise a Zero Shadow Day event in your locality, or share your resource material with us, do let us know at asi.poec@gmail.com

IAU Symposium 340, Jaipur

An IAU Symposium is being organised in Jaipur during 19-24 Feb 2018 on “Long term datasets for understanding solar and stellar magnetic cycles’. As a part of this symposium, and as a continuation of our earlier Rajasthan Astronomy Festival during ASI 2017, we are organising a number of outreach and educational events in Jaipur during this period.
These include a workshop for local teachers and students on basic solar experiments, creation of resource material for hands-on experiments using Jantar Mantar, etc. If you are a participant in the Symposium, and would like to help us in these activities, let us know at asi.poec@gmail.com

CROP 2018 at the ASI meeting in Hyderabad

The next national annual meeting of the ASI wil be hosted by Osmania University in Hyderabad from 5-9 Feb 2018. Similar to what we did in Kashmir and Rajasthan during the previous two meeting, the POEC is planning a number of outreach activities in and around Hyderabad as a part of our Comprehensive Regional Outreach Program (CROP-2018). 2018 is the 100th anniversary of Osmania University, which is where the ASI was founded and housed initially.

We will, like previous times, be organising an Exposure Camp for teachers in the region, support public astronomy events by local groups, facilitate public talks, etc. We would love to hear your ideas about what we can organise, and if you would like to help us in any of these, come and join us! 18 Aug 2018 will be the 150th anniversary of the discovery of Helium during a total solar eclipse, from Guntur and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. We are now in the process of talking to various people and organisations in the area to put together a program to commemorate this event. If you would like to write about the discovery story, about Helium itself, or help in organising an outreach event in schools in these two towns, let us know at asi.poec@gmail.com
