The Astronomical Society of India celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The Society, being the primary body of professional astronomers in India, has always played a central role in promoting academic research and collaboration, as well as astronomy education, in the country. As we enter an era of unprecedented growth in astronomy facilities and global collaborations, it is necessary that the undergraduate and graduate students are exposed to astrophysics rigorously, that is built on the foundations of their curriculum. This is especially important in a country like India, where the presence of astronomy in the physics syllabi is minimal.

In this context, the ASI is extremely happy to have Prof. G. Srinivasan deliver a series of online lectures on astrophysics, aimed at the undergraduate and graduate students of physics and engineering. Prof Srinivasan is an exemplary teacher, and many generations of astronomers have been inspired by his lectures in graduate school. With his mastery over pedagogy, a well honed teaching style, and his ability to tease out the physics underlying seemingly disparate phenomena, the ASI is sure that this lecture series will prove to be a valuable resource for students in the years to come. Hence it is fitting that this series is a part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, and we look forward to welcoming many more astronomers into our ranks in the future.
