Stresses are applied to the mirror blank in order to elastically deform the desired surface into a sphere. Once the required surface accuracy is obtained upon polishing , the stresses are released to deform the spherical surface to the desired one. The theoretical modeling of initial stress that has to be applied was developed by Lubliner and Nelson. This paper deals with the verification of this stress using FEM analysis. The possible irregularities on the surface profile of the segments arising out of the improper application of the stress is also discussed. |
