Abstract : The 11-year solar magnetic cycle is produced by the dynamo process taking place in the Sun's convection zone. A knowledge of the large-scale fluid flows in the interior of the Sun is needed to model this process. With helioseismology providing a lot of information about flows in the solar convection zone, it has become possible to develop a fairly sophisticated model for the generation of solar magnetic fields, known as the flux transport dynamo model. One of the current research frontiers in this field is to understand the irregularities of the solar cycle and to investigate whether such an understanding can enable us to predict future cycles.
