Name: Smitha Subramanian Affiliation: IIA, Bengaluru Conference ID: ASI2019_127 Title : Tracing the connection between compact spheroids in early Universe with the local Universe massive bulges Authors and Co-Authors : - Abstract Type : Invited Abstract Category : Extragalactic Astronomy Abstract : Massive, quiescent high-z compact spheroids, known as red nuggets, are traditionally considered to be the progenitors of the local Universe massive ellipticals, by building their 3D envelopes through dry minor mergers. However, recent studies show that the number density of present-day massive ellipticals are not sufficient to match with that of high-z red nuggets and suggest multiple evolutionary paths for these systems. One among them is that the high-z red-nuggets build up 2D disks around them resulting in present-day lenticular/spiral galaxies. This scenario connects the local massive bulges to red-nuggets. Detailed structural and stellar population studies of local lenticular/spiral galaxies are essential to identify true red-nugget like bulges and to understand the physical processes involved in their evolution which led to the disk growth around them. In this context, I will present the preliminary results from an on-going study of local massive spiral galaxies. |
