Abstract

There has been considerable progress in recent years in determining abundance ratios of individual elements in unresolved galaxies using a method called differential stellar population synthesis. Here I discuss in a critical way those developments and some of their implications for the future. The paper consists of 2 parts: first I look at methods measuring calibrated abundance ratios, and secondly I investigate the evidence from current observations for variations in abundance ratios as a function of galaxy environment.
