Abstract : Vertical bending of the mid-plane in disk galaxies commonly known as corrugations or scalloping have been noticed for long in many disk galaxies including our Milky Way. These mid-plane deviations are not only seen in stars but are also seen in neutral hydrogen gas and have recently been seen in the dust as well, in IC2233. We present the first systematic investigation of corrugations in the dust lanes of disk galaxies. We report and measure the waves seen in dust extinction of R-band SDSS images of five edge-on disk galaxies. We find that these dust waves have a similar size i.e., ∼ few kpcs as their counterparts in stars and gas. While the amplitude of the corrugations is seen to be larger for lower mass galaxies, the wavelength of corrugation does not seem to depend on the mass of host galaxies. Linear stability analysis is performed to find out the dynamical state of these dust disks. Based on WKB analysis, we find that the dust corrugations in half of our sample are stable. Further analysis, on a larger sample would be useful to strengthen the above results.
