Extensive studies of Galactic analogues of massive extragalactic star forming regions with sensitivity to the Jupiter-mass limit are essential to design global star formation models. At ~1.4 kpc from Sun, Cygnus OB2 association is one of the most massive ( >105 M⊙) star forming regions in the Milkyway and is considered to be a prototype of young globular cluster. Hence, it is an ideal target to study the role of extreme star forming environments on the formation and evolution of low-mass stars. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of Young Stellar Objects within an area ~ 1.30 x 1.30 centred at Cygnus OB2, using wide field deep optical photometry (r, i, z and Y bands) taken with 8m Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam combined with near-infrared data from United Kingdom Infrared Telescope Infrared Deep Sky Survey and mid-infrared photometry from Spitzer. This work presents the classification and characterisation of the young stellar population in Cygnus OB2 down to brown-dwarf regime. We investigate the spatial sub-structuring in the region along with an extensive study of circumstellar disk evolution and properties. We analyse the low-mass sub-stellar population in the region and behaviour of Initial Mass Function (IMF) in this regime. This is the deepest and widest analysis of one of the most massive star forming regions in the Milky Way enabling a census down to the unexplored, very low-mass end of the IMF. |
