Abstract : Convective motions are thought to drive the dynamics and activity of the Sun. On a smaller scale, they produce structures that give rise to acoustic waves on the Sun. These waves propagate through the Sun, providing information about its different layers. The resonant normal modes of the Sun are observed in exquisite detail by a variety of ground- and space-based observatories. The eigenfunctions of a reference model of the Sun that is non-rotating, non-convecting and non-magnetic are orthogonal and form a complete basis. We formulate an inverse problem to infer the underlying convective flows from measurements of these normal modes. I will describe the technique and show results from synthetic tests that confirm the utility and power of the method
