Ravikumar Abstract Type : Poster Abstract Category : Extragalactic Astronomy Abstract : Active galactic nucleus (AGN) is one of the most luminous objects in the universe, believed to be powered by accretion of matter on to the central supermassive blackhole (SMBH). We present a novel photometric technique inolving central intensity ratio (CIR) to study the AGN properties in active galaxies, particularly Type 1 Active galaxies, which have broad prominent emission lines in their optical spectra. We perform aperture photometry of archival Spitzer/IRAC images for 22 type 1 Active galaxies. We find that the CIR is positively correlated with SMBH masses of the AGNs. Also, the sample shows significant correlations with AGN parameters: luminosity, radius of broad line region (BLR) and inner scattering radius of torus. It is also found that the measurement of CIR is independent of the inclination of BLR. The dominance of infrared (IR) emission from the dusty torus surrounding the SMBH at the center of galaxy, could be driving the correlation, making the CIR in this sample more connected to the central super-massive black hole than the central light distribution arising from the stars. These correlations prove that the simple photometric quantity, CIR, has huge potential in deciphering the nature of SMBHs. |
