Abstract : The historic discovery of gravitational waves through direct detection by the LIGO observatories in the USA, in principle, opened up a new window for astronomy[1]. In practice, however, the full exploitation of gravitational-wave astronomy will await the global array of LIGO like observatories including the planned LIGO-India observatory [2]. We review the discovery events, the vast spectrum of high-value science that these detections of GW events have already contributed. We give a status of the LIGO-India that just entered its construction phase and provide a deeper insight to the potential of gravitational-wave astronomy in the era of LIGO-India operating with matching sensitivities of the existing network of observatories.
