Abstract : We present optical-ultraviolet photometric and optical spectroscopic analysis of type Ia supernova ASASSN-16ex in the galaxy SDSS J171023.63+262350.3. The observations range from -7 to +126 day with respect to maximum light in B band that occurred on JD = 2457523.25 +/- 0.04 with an apparent magnitude of 16.84 +/- 0.03. Compared to the normal type Ia supernovae, the light curves of ASASSN-16ex are very broad. The decline rate parameter is estimated as 0.73 +/- 0.03, similar to the values obtained for super-Chandrasekhar mass type Ia supernovae SN 2009dc, SN 2007if and SN 2006gz. Like other super-Chandrasekhar mass type Ia events, ASASSN-16ex is very blue at UV bands. The absolute magnitudes at maximum in B and V bands are -19.78 and -19.71 mag, respectively. From the peak bolometric luminosity of log L = 43.40 erg/s, the mass of radio active Ni synthesized in the explosion of ASASSN-16ex is estimated as 0.86 solar mass. The absolute and bolometric luminosities of ASASSN-16ex are comparable to super-Chandrasekhar mass type Ia supernova SN 2006gz. Spectroscopic features are also similar to super-Chandrasekhar mass type Ia supernovae.
