Abstract : Although the elliptical galaxies are known to be the most regular galaxies in the local universe, the physical mechanisms that drive their evolution remain unclear. In this work we have studied the properties of 51 early type L* galaxies in Stripe 82 using SDSS coadded data, which is ∼ 1.5 - 2 magnitude deeper than the SDSS single frame images. L* galaxies are bright galaxies, comparable in mass to the Milky Way and occupy the knee region of the Schechter luminosity function. However, occupying a narrow mass range, L* galaxies are observed to have extremely wide range in morphology and properties. Based on the study of active star forming blue and quenched red L* ellipticals, we find that L* ellipticals evolve via star-formation quenching without much transformation in morphology.
