Abstract : The Sun offers to be a unique laboratory where various predictions of the mechanisms responsible for the generation of the magnetic fields can be observationally tested. It has proved to be challenging to understand the origins of solar magnetism at large, viz, the global fields revealing a butterfly pattern, and at small scales, e.g., the appearance of sunspots and active regions. We will discuss some latest developments on these topics based on recent numerical and observational studies.
