Background:
The cold component of the Universe emits predominantly in the sub-mm wavelengths through continuum emission of dust (refractory molecules) or spectral lines of molecular gas. Conse- quently, observations at mm/sub-mm wavelengths hold the key to our understanding of the formation of structures over a large range of spatial scales from planets to galaxies. While members of the Indian astronomy community have been observing at the mm/sub-mm wavelengths using international facilities at an individual level, the community recently came together and formed the Indian Submillimeter Astronomy Alliance (ISAA) in order to put forward the science drivers for sub-mm observations in a cogent manner. This is a capacity building workshop organized by members of ISAA to disseminate the science possibilities in the mm/sub-mm and also to train the broader Indian astronomy community in the techniques of sub-millimeter astronomy, which will help benefit the ongoing multi-wavelength observational studies.
Agenda:
The one-day workshop will consist of talks on
- The state-of-the-art instrumentation, the existing and upcoming facilities and science in the mm/sub-mm domain
- The upcoming Indian sub-mm facility
- Science topics broadly covering the inter- and circumstellar medium, formation of stars and planets, molecular gas in external galaxies, cosmology (Sunyaev Zeldovich Effect in Galaxy Clusters, Line Intensity Mapping ([C ii] and CO) in galaxies and intergalactic medium)
- Synergy between ongoing studies using the Indian observing facilities operating at other wavelengths and the upcoming Indian facility
Proposers:
B. Mookerjea (TIFR, Mumbai), D. Jagadheep (IIST, Thiruvananthapuram), A. Datta(IIT, Indore), B. Ramesh (RRI, Bangalore)
(on behalf of the Indian Sub-millimeter Astronomy Alliance)
