Title: They were Axiomatic, We are Empirical: The Indian Approach to the Gender Question in Mathematics
Bio of Speaker: Dr. Jayasree Subramanian is an Associate Professor at SRM University in the Department of Mathematics. Although she teaches higher mathematics, Dr. Subramanian has an interdisciplinary background. She completed her PhD in Algebraic Number Theory from the University of Hyderabad. After a couple of postdoctoral fellowships in Mathematics, Dr. Subramanian became inclined towards Feminist Science Studies and carried out an empirical work to understand how gender makes a difference to doing science in India. Her research interests include Equity and Excellence in Mathematics Education, Exploring ethnomathematical knowledge of the communities of weavers in the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana region and Teacher Professional Development in Mathematics. She strives for the development of Mathematics in India by understanding the impediments posed to it by gender and other socioeconomic discriminations.
