Abstract : | Adaptive optics (AO) is a technique utilised to improve the astronomical seeing by compensating for the wavefront distortions present due to the Earth’s atmospheric turbulence. It is available at most of the leading optical/IR observatories. A set of deformable mirrors, wavefront sensors, phase screens and detectors are used to restore the diffraction limited image performance. Adaptive optics has slowly emerged into a full zoo : MOAO, MCAO, GLAO, LTAO, eXAO and LGSAO to cite the main ones utilised at different telescope facilities. These variations arise from the limitations to achieve a perfect image (Strehl ratio : 100%) over a large field of view. AO techniques possess few important properties, like, sensitivity, linearity, achromaticity, aliasing etc. to achieve better angular resolution. Since the astronomical observations are photon-limited, the most important property is ‘sensitivity’ & ‘achromaticity’.
The smaller telescope facilities serve as good examples for investigating the feasibility of AO systems with simulations of the turbulent atmosphere, and hence evaluate the adaptive optics on an optical test bench. The work progress in this regard shall be discussed. |
