These flows can be observed either in the umbra or penumbra of a sunspot. The flow speeds are often supersonic, with the corresponding spectra displaying a steady redshifted component that appears as a separate new line. For this reason, these flows are often referred to as "dual flows". High-resolution observations suggest that these flows are colocated with the foot point of coronal loops. Although their origin is still unclear, they are usually explained either in terms of siphon flows or coronal rain. In this study, we analyse the spectroscopic data of a sunspot from IRIS along with the corresponding imaging data from SDO/AIA to study the observational characteristics of these downflows. |
