Several internal (AGN/stellar feedback, action of bar, bulges) and external processes (ram pressure stripping, major mergers, harassment, starvation, strangulation) have been proposed as responsible for quenching. The main aim of our study is to understand internal quenching mechanisms, especially the effect of structural components of spiral galaxies (like the bar and bulge) in quenching star formation. In this context, we identified a sample of centrally quenched galaxies (z < 0.1, so that we can spatially resolve the different regions of the galaxies) using different star formation rate indicators and the location of galaxies in the M_star vs Star Formation Rate plots. These are ideal candidates to study internal quenching mechanisms. We performed a detailed multi-wavelength image analysis (optical and UV data) of a sub-sample of barred and unbarred spiral galaxies from the above sample to check for any correlation with the bar/bulge properties with internal quenching indicators. From the analysis, we infer that there is a correlation between the length of the bar and internal quenching in barred galaxies. Other findings including the effect of bulge in internal quenching will also be discussed. |
