Since UV observations are possible only from space, these experiments have traditionally been technologically challenging and expensive and have therefore demanded large groups with a variety of science interests. We have been focusing on smaller missions that are driven by specific science problems and shorter time scales. Near UV Galactic Plane Surveyor is a wide-field (3˚) imager with a photon counting detector in the near-UV (NUV, 200 -300 nm), to be flown on an upcoming small satellite mission. The primary science goal will be to map the Galactic plane and brighter regions of the sky in the near UV. Being too bright, the galactic plane is largely unobservable using sensitive large telescopes. Data from our instrument aims to fill this gap. This will also be emphasizing the broader implications of developing affordable NUV imaging techniques. |
