Planetary surface mineral physical chemistry group led by Dr. Guneshwar Thangjam at NISER Bhubaneswar is hiring a JRF in ISRO/DoS project entitled “Lunar mantle exposed or missed in South Pole Aitken basin- Insights from Chandrayaan-2 IIRS". The project is funded for 3 years, however the position will be initially offered for 6 months and then extend after satisfactory performance. It is highly encouraged to get enrolled for PhD program though the JRF absorption doesn't lead to any PhD degree/program. Nature of the work is IIRS hyperspectral data (0.8 - 5 micron) calibration (estimating emissivity and temperature considering surface roughness, and then normalization of illumination geometry using radiative transfer approach). The science objective is study of composition in the South Pole Aitken basin and to understand the mineralogy either of mantle or crustal origin. There are opportunities for active participation in ongoing and upcoming ISRO/NASA/ESA planetary missions.

Qualification: Master’s degree in Physics / Geology / Geophysics / Chemistry with a valid National Eligibility Tests (NET/GATE). Proficiency in python programming handling hyperspectral remote sensing or spectroscopic data shall be given preference.

Last date & application: 31-03-2023 (the application as given in the advt, with required documents, CV, SOP, with 2 reference letters)

Interview: online/offline mode on 5th April.

Another promising but very competitive JRF position in Max Planck India Partner Group (asteroid Ceres and NASA Dawn VIR spectral data calibration and analysis) led by Dr. Thangjam is opening very soon. It is a unique opportunity to work in an international collaborative project (Germany/USA/Canada) and to visit their labs/conferences almost every year. For more details, please please contact Dr. Guneshwar Thangjam (thangjam@niser.ac.in; https://www.niser.ac.in/users/thangjam)
