Dear Colleague,

We invite you to join us for the Govind Swarup Memorial Lecture - 2024, an annual event which NCRA-TIFR started in 2021, in honour of Prof. Govind Swarup.

Prof. Swarup, who passed away in September 2020, was the major force behind establishing radio astronomy research in India. He founded the Radio Astronomy group at TIFR which later became the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, of which he was the founding director. He conceived and led the construction of two novel, large radio telescopes, the Ooty Radio Telescope and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. He was also one of the early advocates for a large international facility which today has taken the shape of the Square Kilometer Array project.

This year's lecture on "Radio Imaging and its cousins", will be delivered by Professor Rajaram Nityananda, ICTS-TIFR.

Rajaram Nityananda is currently an astrophysicist at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (ICTS-TIFR).  He is a former Director of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, TIFR. He is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), fellow of The National Academy of Sciences and also The Indian Academy of Sciences. He is a recipient of the "The Kariamanikkam Srinivasa Krishnan Memorial Lecture Award", from INSA in 2004. He has been Editor of Pramana - Journal of Physics, and Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy, and served on the editorial board of Resonance and Current Science. He was a member of the international steering committee of the Australia Telescope National Facility. His work spans a wide range of problems in theoretical physics, from liquid crystals to radio astronomy. He is well known for his application of the maximum entropy method to the crystallographic "phase-problem" and for image reconstruction in astronomy.  Apart from research, he has contributed considerably to teaching students across the world.

The lecture will be held in person and ONLINE on March 22, 2024 from 10:30 UT (16:00 IST).
