JRF position at NISER in Max Planck Partner Group project, on asteroid Ceres and Vesta spectro-photometry using NASA Dawn mission data:

Interview- 16.02.2022
Application deadline: 13.02.2022

Eligibility:
1. 60% or equivalent GPA in Masters or M.Tech. or M.E in Physics / Geophysics/ Earth Science / Computer/ Engineering or relevant.
2. Valid National Eligibility Tests - CSlR-UGC NET including lectureship (Assistant Professorship) or valid GATE or qualified a National Level Examinations conducted by Central Govt. department and their agencies and institutions such as DBT, DAE, IIT, DST, DRDO etc.

DESIRABLE: Preference will be given to candidates having strong programming and computation knowledge (Python/Matlab/C++/IDL).

FELLOWSHIP: 31,000/- pm plus HRA (as per rules)
AGE: 28 years as on date of Interview, age relaxation to entitled categories as per rules

Science problem: The goal of this project is to answer the open scientific question of the formation and origin of Asteroid Ceres- either formed at the present location in the asteroid belt or outer solar system and migrated by studying its physical properties and chemical composition.

Nature of work and details: In order to understand the nature of Dawn VIR absorption features on Ceres, the same data and observation on asteroid Vesta (Dawn's first target) are also important. The JRF is expected to work on asteroid Vesta data/processing and validation with Ceres data/processing. Processing of NASA Dawn mission's VIR hyperspectral data (in visible to near-infrared wavelength, 0.4 - 5 micron) involves multiple steps- 1. radiometric calibration and artifact correction, 2. thermal emissivity and temperature estimation using Planck black body and Bayesian statistical approach, 3. photometric analysis using radiative transfer approach of Hapke (radiative transfer equation of granular media considering the effects of mineralogy, surface roughness, grain sizes, compaction, and multiple scattering factors, etc; 4. Analysis of spectral absorption features and their chemical composition; 5. Spectral unmixing based on radiative transfer approach
