Abstract : | We study blue straggler stars (BSS) of an open cluster NGC 2506 using the ASTROSAT/UVIT data and other archival data. This is an intermediate-age (~2.2 Gyr) open cluster located at a distance of ~3110 pc. According to the membership information from Gaia EDR3 data, this cluster has 9 BSS. We constructed multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 7 BSS, out of which 4 fitted well with single component SED, whereas 3 showed the possibility of the presence of a hotter companion. The properties such as temperature (T_eff ~ 19000 K), luminosity (L ~ 0.241 L_sun), and radius (R ~ 0.045 R_sun) of the hotter companions of one of the BSS suggested it to be a low mass (LM) white dwarf (WD) candidate. Another two hot companions with estimated T_eff ~ 13250-15000 K, R ~ 0.125-0.099 R_sun, and L ~ 0.435-0.452 L_sun are likely to be extremely low mass (ELM) WDs. Since the detection of LM/ELM WDs in a binary system supports the mass transfer formation mechanism of BSS, we report that at least 3 out of 7 BSS in this cluster may have formed via the mass-transfer channel. |
