  • ASI Zubin Kembhavi Award (for instrumentation) for the year 2021 goes to "Team Astrosat" ASI Justice Oak Award for Outstanding Thesis in Astronomy goes to Dr. Swagat Saurav Mishra, who performed his PhD thesis research at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, is being awarded the Astronomical Society of India’s Justice Oak Award for the best thesis of 2022 for his outstanding and varied contributions to cosmology ranging from the early history of the Universe to dark energy. The ASI Justice Oak Award for Outstanding Thesis in Astronomy committee also selected the following two nominees for Honorable Mention : Dr. Anshu Kumari, who performed her PhD thesis research at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, is being acknowledged for her unique contributions to the development of a solar radio-spectropolarimeter and utilizing this instrument to constrain the elusive solar coronal magnetic fields associated with solar radio bursts. Dr. Surajit Mondal, who performed his PhD thesis research at the National Centre for Radio Astronomy, is being acknowledged for his pioneering contributions to the development of a highly versatile interferometric solar imaging pipeline, and for intelligent use of radio observations to constrain solar energetic phenomena from small to large scales.   • ASI 2022 - 40th meeting of the ASI ASI 2022 will be held from 25th to 29th of March 2022. The main ASI meeting will run from the 26th to the 29th of March. The 1-day workshops, which have become a regular and popular feature of the ASI workshops, will be held on the 25th of March. Please find more details from the meeting website website.   • Second R. C. Gupta Endowment lecture of the ASI The second ASI R. C. Gupta Endowment lecture titled "Origin & Growth of Astronomy in India" is being organised by IISER Mohali on Friday, the 9th of January 2021 at 4:00 PM. The lecture will be given by Professor Mayank Vahia and will examine the evolution of astronomy from the prehistoric period to the present day modern astronomy.   • 39th Meeting of the ASI 39th Meeting of the ASI will be held from 18 - 23 February 2021. In view of the ongoing pandemic, this will be an entirely virtual meeting which will be hosted jointly by ICTS - TIFR Bengaluru, IISER Mohali, IIT Indore and IUCAA Pune. As is now usual, ASI will also host multiple topical workshops just prior to the main meeting. As has been the case for the last several ASI meetings, it is proposed to hold a few one-day workshops the day before the ASI meeting starts. The SOC invites proposals for conducting workshops, in the form of a 1-2 page abstract about the theme, the rationale for the workshop and the expected number of participants. As has been the case for the last several ASI meetings, it is proposed to hold a few one-day workshops the day before the ASI meeting starts (i.e. on Thursday, 13/Feb/2020). The SOC invites proposals for conducting workshops, in the form of a 1-2 page abstract about the theme and rationale for the workshop, expected number of participants, as well as the requirements for audio-visual equipment etc. The organizers should note that 1. All workshop participants have to register through the portal for the main ASI meeting. 2. Organizers would need to provide funding to cover all expenses related to the workshop (apart from the cost of hiring the venue).   • Nominations are invited for the "Justice Oak best thesis" award for the year 2018 The Astronomical Society of India gives the Justice V.G. Oak Award every year for an outstanding Ph.D. thesis in Astronomy and related areas, by a student working for a Ph.D. in India. The nominations for this award may be made by senior scientists, directors or heads of institutes or observatories engaged in research in astronomy, astrophysics, planetary sciences and allied fields. The thesis should have been formally submitted in the calendar year (Jan to Dec) preceding the year of the award ( The thesis should have been submitted in the calendar year Jan to Dec, 2017 for award year 2018). The candidate should have successfully defended the thesis and all formalities for award of degree must be completed at the time of nomination. The objective of the award is to encourage excellence amongst research students in India, and the award is given on the adjudication by a standing Committee appointed by ASI. The nominations should include a summary of the scientific work constituting the thesis, a statement regarding why the nominator considers the thesis outstanding, the curriculum vitae of the candidate and a letter signed by the nominator.     The Astronomical Society of India gives the Justice V.G. Oak Award every year for an outstanding Ph.D. thesis in Astronomy and related areas, by a student working for a Ph.D. in India. The nominations for this award may be made by senior scientists, directors or heads of institutes or observatories engaged in research in astronomy, astrophysics, planetary sciences and allied fields. The thesis should have been formally submitted in the calendar year (Jan to Dec) preceding the year of the award ( 2015 for award year 2016).
    The candidate should have successfully defended the thesis and all formalities for award of degree must be completed at the time of nomination. The objective of the award is to encourage excellence amongst research students in India, and the award is given on the adjudication by a standing Committee appointed by ASI. The nominations should include a summary of the scientific work constituting the thesis, a statement regarding why the nominator considers the thesis outstanding, the curriculum vitae of the candidate and a letter signed by the nominator.

    Justice Oak Best Thesis Award for 2014 was awarded to Dr. Vemareddy Panditi during 33rd Annual Meeting of Astronomical Society of India, NCRA Pune. Vemareddy did his PhD from Udaipur Solar Observatory, PRL under the supervision of Ashok Ambastha and is presently working at IIA as an INSPIRE Faculty.

  • The Vainu Bappu Gold medal for the year 2008 has been awarded jointly to Dr. Niayesh Afshordi and Dr. Nissim Kanekar.

  • The executive committee invites nominations for the new discovery award and the Justive Oak best thesis award.

  • The executive council has approved initiating a series of symposia titled ASI symposia. These meetings are expected to be on focused topics. It is expected that these symposia will encourage discussions amongst astronomers working on similar problems. ASI will provide funding of up to Rs.1 Lakh for each symposium, and up to three such symposia will be sponsored every year. Those interested in organising an ASI symposium should get fill in the application in the given format and send it to the secretary at least 16 weeks before the start of the conference.

  • ASI had sponsored popular astronomy lectures (to be delivered at School/Junior College/Public level at preferably away from Major Cities) by ASI Members during the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) 2009. Under this scheme, each of the ASI member who had shown willingness for these lectures, were paid Rs. 5000/- (to each such member) for this purpose (to cover the local travel; logistics and refreshments expenses etc). The executive council has decided to continue support for such activities beyond the IYA. ASI members who wish to give popular talks under this scheme are requested to contact the secretary for further details.

  • 22nd Meeting of the Astronomical Society of India held in Thiruvanthapuram
     

    The ASI held its 22nd Meeting in Thiruvanathapuram during Feb 13-15, 2003. The meeting was hosted by the Department of Physics, University of Kerala and the Space Physics Laboratory, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, with financial support from the Indian Space Research Organisation. The beautiful Kanakakunnu Palace at the heart of the city was the venue of the meeting. An excellent scientific program was prepared by the Scientific Organising Committee consisting of DCV Mallik (Chair), NM Ashok, D Bhattacharya, J. Chengalur, BN Dwivedi, SK Ghosh, Pushpa Khare, T Padmanabhan, SR Prabhakaran Nayar and P Sreekumar. There were 29 invited talks, and over 100 poster contributions. Evening lectures were arranged for the general audience after the sessions.

  • Presentation of M.K. Vainu Bappu Gold Medal for Young Astronomers for the Year 2002
     

    Dr. Brian P. Schmidt of the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, received the Vainu Bappu Gold Medal for the year 2002 in a function organized at IUCAA, Pune, on January 24, 2004. At this occasion, he also delivered the Vainu Bappu Memorial Lecture on Accelerating Universe. The citation of Dr. Schmidt reads as follows: Dr. Schmidt's major scientific achievements have been in observational studies of supernovae. His thorough and insightful observations have helped in a better understanding of the progenitors of supernovae, the mechanism of the explosion, and the chemical composition of the different types of supernovae. Of particular importance has been his contribution to the use of the very distant Type Ia supernovae to determine the rate of change of the expansion of the Universe. Dr. Schmidt and his collaborators have recently shown that the Universe is not only expanding, but accelerating. If this result stands the test of time, it will undoubtedly be one of the most important discoveries in contemporary cosmology.

  • 23rd Meeting of the Astronomical Society of India was hosted by ARIES, Nainital during February 21-24, 2005
     

    The 23rd meeting of ASI was hosted by ARIES in Nainital on the invitation of Prof. Ram Sagar. The meeting was well attended by over 200 participants. There were 36 invited talks, 2 evening lectures, 7 thesis presentations and 147 poster papers. The inaugural session was held on February 21, 2005 in the auditorium of the Uttaranchal Academy of Administration, where the subsequent scientific sessions were also arranged on the topics: (i) Structure and dynamics of the Solar Atmosphere, (ii) Stars/ISM/Galaxies, (iii) Radio Astronomy, (iv) Cosmology, (v) Reports from Observatories, (vi) Rapporteur talks on posters, and (vii) future facilities. The General Body Meeting of the ASI was held on February 23, 2005, which was attended by 52 members. As is usual at Nainital in February, it was very cold during the meeting, however, the delegates generally enjoyed their stay; thanks to the efforts of the LOC. Details of the awards which were announced during ASI-2005 are given in the following:

    Best Poster Paper Awards: A set of four awards is instituted for the Poster presentations at the meetings of the ASI, each consisting of a cash prize of Rs 500 and a certificate. A panel of judges comprising of Yashwant Gupta, P. Venkatakrishnan, Shiv Sethi and NM Ashok was formed for the selection of best poster awards in 4 categories during ASI-2005.     Best Presentation of Thesis Award: This feature is instituted by the society to encourage the participation of young astronomers who have completed their theses during the last two years preceding the ASI meeting. A panel of judges comprising of T. Chandrasekhar, Siraj Hasan, and K. Subramanian was appointed by the Executive Council to select the best presentation. The result announced by K. Subramanian, Chair, SOC, is as follows:
    P. Manoj (IIA, Bangalore; now at IUCAA, Pune) - Star Formation: Circumstellar Environment around Young Stellar Objects

    Young Astronomer Award for 2005: The aim of this award, made once in every two years, is to motivate young Indian scientists to make outstanding research contributions in Astronomy/Astrophysics and to publish the same in the Bull. Astron. Soc. India. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs 3000 and a scroll of honour. A panel of three referees comprising of GC Anupama, Harish Bhatt and DJ Saikia considered the candidates for the ASI-Young Astronomer Award 2005 based on regular papers published in Bull. Astron. Soc. India during the years 2003 and 2004. The panel recommended the following paper for the award:

  • 24th General Body Meeting of ASI held on February 10, 2006 at NSSS-2004, Andhra University, Waltair:
     

    The issue of holding the annual ASI-GBM was discussed at the GBM on 23rd February 2005 during the 23rd ASI meeting, Nainital. It was suggested that ASI-GBM could be held during the National Space Science Symposium (NSSS) which are organised in the alternate years when ASI meeting is not convened. The 24th ASI-GBM was held on February 10, 2006 during the 14th NSSS (February 9-12, 2006) at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. A session in Astronomy was also arranged in this symposium. The general body meeting held on February 10, 2006 was thinly attended by 24 members. The president and vice-president could not attend the GBM, and it was presided by the Secretary, Dr. Ashok Ambastha.

    New Discovery Award: An award for the discoveries of comets, asteroids, novae, supernovae and any other astrophysical phenomena made by an Indian National in India. There is no age restriction for this award. Nominations are invited for the discovery made during the period 2005-2006.

    Justice V.G. Oak Award 2007 for Outstanding Thesis in Astronomy: An award for outstanding Ph.D. thesis in Astronomy by an Indian student engaged in research in astronomy, astrophysics, planetary sciences and allied fields. The thesis should have been formally submitted in the year 2006.

    Vainu Bappu Gold Medal-2006: The Astronomical Society of India invites nominations for this award instituted in the memory of late M.K. Vainu Bappu, founder President of the Society and a past President of the International Astronomical Union, once every two years to honour exceptional contributions to Astronomy & Astrophysics by young scientists anywhere in the world. The award of the medal is based on an evaluation of the scientific work of the nominee as published or accepted for publication on or before 31st December of the year of the award. The nominee must be 35 years of age or younger on this date. Nominations for the award may be made by a Head of Institution, Director of an Observatory, Head of Department or by senior scientists and should include the following information:

  • Membership matters:
     

    The membership list of the Astronomical Society of India has crossed the 1000 mark. However, it has been observed that a large number of persons are not regularly paying annual membership subscriptions. Please note that the annual subscription of the Regular, Associate and Student categories of membership becomes due on the 1st day of each calendar year. Persons who have not paid their annual subscriptions are requested to contact the treasurer, Prof. R.C. Kapoor, to ascertain the outstanding dues to be paid for continuation of their membership. The existing Regular Members may give their option to become LIFE member to the treasurer, for which the prescribed subscription would be payable. As resolved by the 23rd GBM in Nainital, those who failed to pay the arrears by the end of the year 2005 are considered to have lost their membership, and are required to submit fresh application form.

  • Prof. Arvind Bhatnagar -An Obituary:
     

    Prof. Arvind Bhatnagar passed away on the evening of May 18, 2006 at Udaipur following severe cardiac and respiratory complications. He had returned back to his city, Udaipur, just one day before, on May 17, 2006, after spending two months in Delhi where he was recuperating from cardiac problems. Although he was not keeping good health over the last few years, he had retained his enthusiasm and dynamism as ever to be actively engaged in both research and social activities. As the Arvind we all knew, he had pushed behind his urgent personal commitments and rather chose to avail an opportunity to observe the total solar eclipse of March 29, 2006 from Turkey. While making the arrangements for his trip, he stretched beyond what his body could take and the cardiac problems decimated his plans.

    Prof. Bhatnagar was known internationally for his significant contributions to Solar Astronomy. He was the founder-director of the Udaipur Solar Observatory. He also took immense interest in popularization of astronomy and helped establishing several planetaria across India. Arvind Bhatnagar was born in Beawar, Rajasthan on 19th November 1936. He had his early education in Agra, Almora and Nainital. After completing his M.Sc. in Physics, he joined the UP State Observatory, Nainital, in 1958 and worked there until 1961. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Solar Physics in 1964 from Agra University while working at the Kodaikanal Observatory under the guidance of Prof. M K. Vainu Bappu. He then worked as a Meteorologist in the India Meteorological Department during 1965-67. He was awarded the Carnegie Fellowship to work at Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories, USA, during 1968-70. Afterwards he worked as a Resident Astronomer at the Big Bear Solar Observatory of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California, USA till 1972.

    In 1972, Prof. Bhatnagar returned to India to establish a unique island solar observatory in the middle of Lake Fatehsagar in Udaipur under the aegis of the Vedhshala, Ahmedabad. This lake site was carefully selected by him after taking into consideration the facts that Rajasthan received the maximum sunshine and the large body of lake water helps to stabilize the air turbulence arising due to heating of ground by the solar radiation. Due to his efforts, the solar observatory was taken over by the Department of Space in December 1981 for speedy growth, and was affiliated to the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad. The Udaipur Solar Observatory has become internationally renowned as one of the major centers for high-resolution solar observations. It is also one of the six observatories located around the world participating in the Global Oscillations Network Group (GONG) for the study of solar interior. In December 1996, Prof. Bhatnagar retired as the director of the Udaipur Solar Observatory, and continued to work on topics related to the solar interior as an Emeritus Scientist. He worked on helioseismology using the GONG data and studied the p-mode frequency shift with the phase of solar cycle. He co-authored with Bill Livingston a fascinating book on solar physics entitled “Fundamentals of Solar Astronomy”, and had recently embarked on another book entitled “Manual for Solar Astronomy – for beginners” funded by DST. He wrote more than 80 papers on a wide variety of problems and edited two books. Prof. Bhatnagar was elected a Fellow of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, India (Allahabad). He was a founder member of the Astronomical Society of India and a member of the International Astronomical Union. Prof. Bhatnagar was the founder Director of the Nehru Planetarium, Mumbai from 1976 to 1978, and advisor to many planetaria in the country, namely Jawahar Planetarium, Allahabad, Nehru Planetarium, Delhi, and Sardar Patel Planetarium, Baroda. He encouraged a number of young students to take up active interest in pursuing scientific activities and also guided several students during their research career. In 1996, Prof. Bhatnagar started a novel project called SUCHE (Swatch, Healthy, Urban, Clean and Hygienic Environment) Abhiyan in several localities of Udaipur under ASTHA Sansthan for solid waste management through public participation. He was also appointed as one of the High Court Commissioners to monitor the directives of the High court in connection with protection of the lake system of Udaipur. In his passing we have lost a person with unique characteristics and capabilities and it will be difficult to fill up this void.

  • 25th Meeting of ASI held during February 7-9, 2007 at Osmania University, Hyderabad
     

    The 25th meeting of ASI was hosted by Department of Astronomy, Osmania University, Hyderabad. The meeting was well attended by over 140 participants. A very exciting scientific program was drawn up by the SOC chaired by Dr. K. Subramaniam (IUCAA, Pune), consisting of 24 invited talks, 2 evening lectures, 8 thesis presentations and 117 poster papers. A special highlight of this meeting was the "Prize Talks" by the Vainu Bappu Gold Medal Awardees for the Year 2004, Dr. R. Srianand (IUCAA) and Dr. Ray Jayawardhana (Univ. Toronto, Canada). The scientific sessions were held in Mekaster Auditorium, on the topics: (i) Planets/Sun, (ii) ISM, (iii) Compact objects, (iv) Extragalactic astronomy, (v) Reports from Observatories, (vi) Rapporteur talks on posters, (vii) Thesis talks, (viii) Mini Symposium on Diffuse background and (ix) Mini symposium on Results from surveys. The General Body Meeting of the ASI was held on February 9, 2007, which was attended by 40 members. The delegates enjoyed their stay; thanks to the efforts of the LOC, very efficiently coordinated by Dr. S. N. Hasan (Osmania University). Details of the awards which were announced during ASI-2007 are given in the following:

    Vainu Bappu Gold Medal-2004: Announcement for Vainu Bappu Gold Medal 2004 was made through BASI, SolarNews (Electronic Newsletter), AAS Bulletin, IAU, by post to more than 50 distinguished researchers both within the country and abroad, and to directors/heads of various institutes. In response, three nominations were received. A panel under the chairmanship of Dr. G. Srinivasan was constituted by the President for evaluating the nominations, with Drs. SM Chitre, A Pramesh Rao, T Prabhu and SK Ghosh as members. The M.K. Vainu Bappu Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society of India for the year 2004 was jointly awarded to Dr. Raghunanathan Srianand of Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune, India, and Dr. Ray Jayawardhana of the University of Toronto, Canada. The gold medals, certificates and citations were presented to the awardees at the 25th Meeting of the ASI on February 7, 2007, where they also gave their talks.

    The citation of Dr. Srianand reads: “The M.K. Vainu Bappu Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society of India for the year 2004 is awarded to Dr. R. Srianand of Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune, India for his outstanding contributions to cosmology. He shares this award with Dr. Ray Jayawardhana of the University of Toronto, Canada. Dr. Srianand’s major scientific contributions have been in understanding the physics of inter-galactic medium through spectroscopic observations of QSOs. He and his collaborators made the first measurement of the temperature of cosmic-microwavebackground radiation at a high redshift of greater than 2. Dr. Srianand and his collaborators have placed a strong constraint on the variation of fine structure constant over look-back time scales of ten billion years".

    The citation of Dr. Jayawardhana reads: “The M.K. Vainu Bappu Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society of India for the year 2004 is awarded to Dr. Ray Jayawardhana of the University of Toronto, Canada, for his outstanding contributions to the area of star formation and sub-stellar objects. He shares this award with Dr. R. Srianand of Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune, India. Dr. Jayawardhana’s major scientific contributions have been in understanding evolution of sub-stellar objects. He and his collaborators have shown that majority of brown dwarfs have disks similar to young stars, and young brown dwarfs go through an accretion phase. Dr. Jayawardhana and his collaborators have provided strong evidence suggesting that formation of brown dwarfs is merely an extension of star formation".

     

    Best Poster Paper Awards: A set of four awards is instituted for the Poster presentations at the meetings of the ASI, each consisting of a cash prize of Rs 500 and a certificate. A panel of judges comprising of Dipankar Bhattacharya (RRI), P. Venkatakrishnan (USO-PRL), J.S. Bagla (HRI) and A.A. Deshpande (RRI) was formed for the selection of best poster awards in 4 categories during ASI-2007. The results announced by K. Subramanian, Chair, SOC, are as follows:

    Instrumentation (I) - Jointly to (i) Proposed Adaptive Optics System for Vainu Bappu Telescope by A. K. Saxena (IIA, Bangalore),  V. Chinnappan (IIA, Bangalore) and J. P. Lancelot (IIA, Bangalore), and (ii) Feasibility of using ANN-based Algorithms for Improving the Sensitivity of TACTIC Imaging Telescope by V.K. Dhar (BARC, Mumbai), A.K. Tickoo (BARC, Mumbai),  M.K. Koul (BARC, Mumbai),  R. Koul (BARC, Mumbai) and  B.P. Dubey (BARC, Mumbai).

    Best Presentation of Thesis Award: This feature is instituted by the society to encourage the participation of young astronomers who have completed their theses during the last two years preceding the ASI meeting. A panel of judges was appointed by the Executive Council to select the best presentation. The result announced by K. Subramanian, Chair, SOC. This award was jointly given to the following:

    Amrit Lal Ahuja (IUCAA, Pune) for his thesis talk entitled "Study of Pulsar DM using the GMRT", and
    Anand  Hota  (NCRA-TIFR, Pune) for his thesis talk entitled "A  Radio  Study  of  Gas Loss  Processes  in Nearby  Galaxies".

    Young Astronomer Award for 2007: The aim of this award, made once in every two years, is to motivate young Indian scientists to make outstanding research contributions in Astronomy/Astrophysics and to publish the same in the Bull. Astron. Soc. India. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs 3000 and a scroll of honour. A panel of three referees comprising of GC Anupama, Harish Bhatt and DJ Saikia considered the candidates for the ASI-Young Astronomer Award 2007 based on regular papers published in Bull. Astron. Soc. India during the years 2005 and 2006. The panel recommended the following paper for the award:

    This award is shared by Sabyasachi Pal (Centre for Space Physics, Kolkata) and Samir Mandal (Centre for Space Physics, Kolkata); first author and co-author of the paper who are below the age of 35 years. The result was announced during the ASI2007-GBM. -posted on February 14, 2007

  • 26th General Body Meeting of ASI held on February 27, 2008 at NSSS08 at RAC, Ooty
     

    A condolence message was read for Prof. K.D. Abhayankar who had passed away on 8th Nov 2007. Outcome of the VB2006 award was announced to the GB. The President mentioned that it is matter of pride that two ASI members (Yashawant Gupta and Anil Bharadwaj) have received the SS Bhatnagar Awards in Physics and Planetary Sciences, respectively, for the year 2007. The planning for 27th ASI meeting was discussed. Finally the role to be played by ASI in the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) was also discussed.

  • 27th Meeting of the Astronomical Society of India 2009 February 18-20
     

    IIA hosted the meeting of the Astronomical Society of India after a gap of 23 years. The meeting was held in the IIA campus, and had over 250 participants. The Presidential address by Jitendra Nath Goswami was followed by the award ceremony of the Vainu Bappu Memorial Gold Medal (VB2006). The awardee, Banibrata Mukhopadhyay of IISc delivered the Vainu Bappu award lecture, entitled 'Measuring Spin of Black holes from their QPOs: A Test of General Relativity'.

    The special scientific features of the meeting were twomini-symposia, 'The Dynamic Sun' and 'Star-formation History'. There were 17 invited scientific talks on solar,stellar, Galactic and extragalactic astrophysics, and over 160 poster presentations. Specific time of 3 hours was allotted for poster-viewing and interactions, besides which five rapporteurs summarised the posters in the plenary session. There were six talks in the customary session for PhD theses summaries. There was a session entitled 'New Initiatives', which included talks describing new astronomy and data facilities in the country, as well as one on the outreach initiatives by Vigyan Prasar of DST. Jayant Narlikar delivered an evening lecture titled 'How Astronomy has Contributed to Enrichment and Survival of Human Societies' to a packed auditorium that included members of the public. A notable feature of the ASI was a late-evening 'reminiscences' session, in which the past presidents of ASI dwelt on the contributions by the late Krishna Damodar Abhyankar, his initiation of the formation of the ASI and later, his persistent efforts to sustain it.

    There was a parallel meeting of the Forum for Resource Sharing in Astronomy, in which librarians of IIA, RRI, TIFR, IUCAA, NCRA and ARIES came together to discuss digitisation projects, and implementation of open access repositories. In addition, IIA organised a digital exhibit of astronomical photography by amateur astronomers, and the performance of a play on Galileo. G. C. Anupama was Convenor of the local organising committee, which received excellent support from the administrative, computer support and library staff of IIA. In addition to IIA, the meeting was sponsored by PRL, IUCAA, ARIES, ISRO, TIFR, RRI and HRI, and also received support from Allied Publications, Cambridge University Press and Elsevier Science.

    Special ASI sponsored session at Bangalore Planetarium:

    On 17th February, 2009, the day before the scientific sessions of ASI began, ASI and Bangalore Planetarium co-organized a special session on 'Amateur astronomy: Pro-Am collaboration' at Bangalore Planetarium. The lectures covered various aspects of amateur astronomy and possible collaboration. It was attended by over 100 particiapnts from all over India and offered scope for plenty of discussions and interactions. The astrophotoes by amateurs were displayed.

  • Vainu Bappu 2006 Award
     

    Announcement for Vainu Bappu Gold Medal 2006 was made through BASI, ASI web page, emails to ASI members and other distinguished researchers both within the country and abroad, and to directors/heads of various institutes. In response, seven nominations were received. A panel under the chairmanship of Rajaram Nityananda was constituted by the ASI President for evaluating the nominations, with K.P. Singh, N. Hasan and B.G. Ananda Rao as members. The M.K. Vainu Bappu Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society of India for the year 2006 was awarded to Dr. Banibrata Mukhopadhyay of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The gold medal, certificate and citation were presented to the awardee at the 27th Meeting of the ASI on February 18, 2009, where he also gave the Vainu Bappu Award lecture.

    The citation of Dr. Banibrata Mukhopadhyay reads:

    'The M. K. Vainu Bappu Medal of the Astronomical Society of India for the year 2006 is awarded to Dr. Banibrata Mukhopdhyay of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India for his outstanding contributions to Astronomy & Astrophysics.

    Dr. Mukhopadhyay's major scientific contributions have been in the field of astrophysical fluid dynamics and astroparticle physics. He has proposed a new method to study relativistic accretion flows in pseudo-Newtonian (or pseudo-general relativistic) approach. His major contribution to astroparticle physics and cosmology is to show that under certain circumstances, spinor fields in curved spacetime break the CPT invariance.'
