About CEBS: The University of Mumbai - Department of Atomic Energy (GoI) Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CEBS) germinated as a result of brainstorming by senior academicians like Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Prof. Vijay Khole and Prof. Shashikumar Chitre for strengthening higher education in basic sciences. The Centre started functioning as a DAE-BRNS funded project from 17 September, 2007 and was notified as a ‘Grant-in-Aid’ institution of the Department of Atomic Energy (GoI) effective from 1 January 2016. CEBS has a small core faculty which includes many distinguished professors of international repute, and further inducts several distinguished visiting faculty from proximate institutions. CEBS offers a residential integrated 5-year M.Sc. course in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. Students are admitted to CEBS after 12th standard or equivalent examination on the basis of a nationwide entrance test called National Entrance Screening Test (NEST). Since 2019 CEBS has also initiated its Ph. D. program in all the four disciplines of basic sciences.
