JRF position at IIST to work on Gamma Ray Bursts and EM counterparts of GW events
Applications are invited for a DST funded JRF position at IIST (Trivandrum) to work with L. Resmi and Kuntal Misra (ARIES) on radio afterglows of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) (https://www.iist.ac.in/career/details/3587). Selected candidate will have the option to join IIST’s PhD program subject to fulfilment of eligibility conditions.
The student will focus on data analysis of radio transients and multi-wavelength modelling using data from other wavelengths. There will an emphasis on electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Wave (GW) events detected in the third observing cycle of AdvLigo/Virgo starting from early-2019. Our group has guaranteed time on the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA), Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), and Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) as part of an international collaboration, and time in other telescopes are likely to come through. There will also be opportunities to collaborate with other national institutions and members of our international team.
We seek excellent students with a strong background in physics and interest in astrophysics. Prior exposure to radio interferometric data analysis is an advantage, but not a necessary qualification. The research fellow is expected to travel to GMRT, Pune, India, for observations and to ARIES, Nainital for collaborative purposes. The deadline for application is 31 Aug 2018, 17:00hrs IST.
Eligibility : (1) Masters degree in physics / astrophysics /astronomy / space sciences or BS-MS in physics or related areas or B.Tech in physical sciences. (2) GATE in physics / JEST score in physics or UGC-CSIR NET in physics. Qualification under item-2 is required to join IIST PhD program. Selection will be carried out through application screening followed by an interview.
Fellowship :- Duration of the DST JRF term is 1+1 years, with a monthly Emolument is 25,000 INR. If continuing for the PhD program, stipend according to IIST rules will be provided. On-campus accommodation will be provided subject to availability. In the event of non-availability of on-campus housing, HRA as per rules will be provided.
